FAQs
Are you a doula agency?
No. We are a collective of independent postpartum doulas who work together to make it easier for families to find experienced, trusted support. Each doula manages her own schedule, rates, and client relationships. By working as a collective, we can often offer families more flexibility and better availability than a single doula can provide.
When should we hire a postpartum doula?
The earlier the better! Our schedules usually get booked out 3-6 months in advance so we highly encourage you to start planning early. That said, it’s not always feasible to plan in advance so don’t hesitate to reach out to us to check for last minute availability.
How many hours of support will we need?
Every family is different, but families typically schedule 2-3 days per week, between 4-6 hours per visit, for the first 1-3 months. We can work together to determine the amount of time that meets your needs.
What does postpartum doula support cost?
Because each member of our collective is an independent business owner, rates may vary slightly between doulas. Most families can expect to invest about $35–$45 per hour, depending on the doula and the type of support requested. Your doula will discuss her rates, availability, and any package options during your consultation so you can choose the level of support that’s right for you.
How do I book a postpartum doula?
Email us at PittsburghDoulaCollective@gmail.com and tell us a little about your family, where you live, your due date, and the type of support you’re looking for. We’ll connect you with one or more doulas with availability. From there, you’ll schedule a free consultation, ask questions, and choose the doula who feels like the best match for your family. You can also reach out to individual doulas directly. You can find their contact information with their bio.
Are there limits to Postpartum Doula Care?
Yes! Doulas provide non-medical support only. If your doula notices any problem of medical concern, they will make an appropriate suggestion or referral, such as encouraging a consult with an IBCLC or pediatrician. Doulas do “light housekeeping” which can be confusing at times. On the Yes list: A quick floor sweep, refilling toilet paper, or bringing in delievered packages. On the No list: Regular mopping, cleaning toilets, or outdoor chores like pulling weeds.
