About
My name is Ocean Hak-Kuhn (she/her) and I’m a postpartum doula living in and serving the East End of Pittsburgh, PA. I’m originally from Richmond, Virginia and raised in a big family. My parents were bohemians (an artist and a birthworker!) and instilled in me the importance of being a part of our community. It was modeled to me to show up for both the big and small moments and to connect with and rely on the world around me– to hold and to be held. In my teens and 20’s, my interpretation of this resulted in intertwining with a lot of different families, providing childcare as a nanny and learning a lot from the various parents/dynamics/cultures I was around.
As I stepped further into adulthood, I was looking to gain more education and expand my reach for ways to feel connected. This is when I took a postpartum doula training (Birth Arts International), quickly followed by a birth doula training (ToLABOR) and a spark was lit. I began supporting families in the early postpartum period and later attending births as well. I’m a big believer in knowledge as a form of empowerment so in 2020, I became a Certified Lactation Counselor (Healthy Children’s Project) and was able to provide my families with evidence-based information on breastfeeding and other feeding plans.
When I became a parent myself, after years of doing this work, I felt caught off guard by how monumental of a change my brain and body and every aspect of my life was undergoing. I had a lot of the information and years worth of second hand experience from being a doula, but what helped most crucially was the physical presence and reassurance of my doulas and loved ones. Walking alongside parents in early parenthood taught me that providing a reprieve/listening ear/open hands/safe space is a vital piece for the health of the postpartum period. I carry this with me every time I’m invited into a postpartum space.
